We talked about requirements for the Emergency Preparedness merit badge. After, we played a game of frisbee golf.

The scouts participated in a combined activity with the young men and women of the Grandview Ninth Ward. They played a version of dodge ball in the cultural hall.

Camp Out - - Little Sahara Sand Dunes (Updated)

On Friday, April 23, 2010, members of Troop 797 met at the Grandview chapel to leave for a camp out to the Little Sahara Sand Dunes. Those participating are shown in the above photo: Tyler Rife, Gunnar Legas, Sam Jensen, Max Hoopes, and Scoutmasters Greg Jones and Spencer Fowers.

At the sand dunes the scouts pitched their tents, prepared their meals using backpacking stoves, played in the sand dunes, and at the end of the day read and discussed 1 Nephi 2.

On Saturday the scouts played cooked breakfast, played in the dunes, took down the camp, did geocaching, and went on a hike of over 2 miles wearing their backpacks.

The scouts who went on this trip completed the following rank advancement requirements: prepared 2 meals using backpacking stove (the backpacking merit badge requires 3 total), one overnight scout camp out (the camping merit badge requires 20 total), and completed a hike of 2 miles while wearing their backpack (a backpacking merit badge requirement).

Today we discussed what to bring on our camp out on the 24-25. We then ran 1 mile to get in shape for backpacking.

Ideas for Equipment and Food for Our Backpacking Trip

This Friday and Saturday the Scouts are going to the Sand Dunes. We'll treat this trip as backpacking trip, having scouts bring only what they can bring in their backpacks, and taking a 2-mile hike with the backpacks on Saturday morning. In terms of equipment, the scout book has checklists. In terms of food, there are some good ideas at this website. We'll have a pack check on Wednesday at troop meeting, and then meet at the chapel at 4 pm Friday, returning between 2 and 3 pm on Friday.

Today at 10:00 A.M. we went down to Lions Park. While there, we dug up grass to make 3 foot rings around trees. We then put mulch around each tree. We did this for 2 hours and had a great time.

The scouts collected donations from the members of the Grandview Ninth Ward, and took them to the Food Bank. Separately, Landon Ledingham and his father Steve went to the Food Bank and helped the sort food.

Today at 6:45 we started with an opening activity of searching the scout closet for backpacking stoves. We then talked about how to use them for our upcoming backpacking trips. Then we split into patrols and fulfilled some requirements for the backpacking merit badge. To close we had a great time training for backpacking by running a mile.

Ice Fishing

Today some of the troop went ice fishing at Deer Creek. We left at 7:15am and got back around 2:30pm. Max Hoopes caught the only fish, a 10 inch Rainbow Trout. We had hot chocolate and chunky chili for lunch. It was a great trip!

Troop Meeting

Brother Hoopes led the scouts in a pre-opening activity, Hi-Lo, in which scouts had to stand in line in order from high to low, based on height, weight, age, and other factors, without talking.

The scouts planned for the upcoming ice fishing activity, and played a decision-making game. Each patrol had to decide what to do if they went to a movie, got their late, saw a long line, thought they might not make it into the theater, then see a friend towards the front of the line.

Today we had a combined activity. We played a game called battleship volleyball, where we had two teams that each formed "ships". The net had sheets draped over it so we could not see the other side. We tried to hit people on the other side of the net with 2 beach balls.

Brother Spencer Fowers taught the troop about ice fishing - - the troop is planning an ice fishing trip for February 20.

Sam Jensen led his patrol in teaching the troop about using the STOP method if they get lost.

The patrols separated to selected their patrol names, yells, and flags. Sam Jensen's patrol is named the Falcons, and Max Hoopes' patrol is named the Flying Donkeys. The patrols also did an exercise in which they discussed what they would do if their parents gave them one dollar to use for a school lunch.

Tonight the troop worked on fire building skills and practiced building fires. Priesthood Meeting - - Ward Conference

Today the Scouts attended a joint meeting for holders of the Melchizedek and Aaronic Priesthood. President Gerry Reynolds, First Counselor in the Grandview Stake, presided and conducted.

Brother Jay Peterson, First Counselor in the Bishopric of the Grandview Ninth Ward, spoke about the importance of living to achieve those things that matter most, and of dealing with potential challenges to our values or commitment by "role playing" how will what we will do in such circumstances.

President Scott Cherry, Second Counselor in the Grandview Stake, then spoke. Using a talk by President Monson as a foundation, he spoke of the having courage: 1) not to criticize or judge others (he quotes Mother Theresa, who said that if we judge others, then we have no time to love them); 2) to be chaste; and, 3) stand for things of righteousness.
